Thank you so much for your support with tennis over the last year. The junior coaching programme has flourished since lockdown lifted and along with the existing coaching team, I hope to be able to grow the club and the potential opportunities for your child’s tennis at the club. The purpose of this letter is to let you know the goals and plans for the Junior section for the remainder of 2021 and 2022.
Junior Coaching Goals and Opportunities
I see my main role as the Head Coach at the club is to offer high quality tennis coaching to as many players as possible with the aim of helping each player reach their potential at tennis and to install a love of tennis and physical activity that stays with them throughout their lives. In 2022, I want to bring more competitive opportunities to junior players and plan to enter teams into the Notts Summer leagues. I plan to continue work on my own development as a coach whilst trying to help the other coaches and volunteers at the club in their development as coaches/tennis assistants. In my experience, a thriving coaching and competition programme helps secure the long term viability of any tennis club and helps secure membership levels needed to keep clubs active. The plans outlined below are underpinned by this philosophy.
Player Development
Due to the growth in the number of juniors accessing the coaching programme, I now feel it is the right time to plan the introduction of a new academy strand to the junior coaching programme. I will be recruiting for this role in February 2022 and would like a performance focused coach to work with junior players who want to compete and play tennis at least twice a week. I envisage this person to also work with all junior/adult players which means we can increase the amount of junior and adult coaching opportunities at the club. This will not impact my work at the club and I will continue to work alongside Pete and Kathryn to develop and nurture a love of tennis for all the juniors in the existing groups.
I hope for this aspect of the programme to be in place by April 2022 and it would be great to attract an ambitious Coach to the club who can offer those children, who are interested, an invitational/academy based programme.
Also, in October I will be writing each players annual development report.
Coach Development
I am delighted that both Pete Fender and Kathryn Gilmour, both active team players at the club, are working alongside me to develop the junior coaching programme. Pete already works regularly at the club and Kathryn is keen to get even more involved in 2022 which is great. Freddie has also been developing his coaching and will take his Level 1 in Spring 2022.
I plan to meet regularly with the coaching team to offer coach education and will also be running a Tennis Leaders course for the teenagers at the club to give them more knowledge/skills when helping with junior players development.
